I seem to be having a problem with slow frame rates during a magic effect. How do I fix this problem? You may have a lower specification machine. To fix this situation, change your screen size to Quarter screen and low resolution fonts. If you are using a faster machine and do not want to play in the Quarter Screen size disable the performance options.
My Menu box is blurred and discoloured.
First, run the FF8Config program, located in the Start menu, and go to the Graphics tab. Look at the last entry in the box on the right called "Required Features for Direct3D." If "8-bit Paletted textures" says "Fail," then your video card does not support the rendering feature used to create the menu screens, and they may be a little discoloured. Try updating the driver for your video card. You can download and install this from the card manufacturer's website.
We also recommend that you try the reference drivers for the card, if there are any. Reference drivers are made by the manufacturer of the chipset on the video card. If you know the chipset manufacturer, we prefer that you try these drivers instead. If that does not work, you can run the game in Software Render mode by choosing "Software Renderer" in the Renderer selection box.
The in-game graphics seem blocky or distorted, or the colors are wrong.
Video issues such as these are almost always due to outdated drivers for the video card. Provided that the chipset on the video card is fully supported by the game, these issues can be easily resolved by updating your video card driver. You can find these updates for free, download them from the card manufacturer's website. After downloading the driver, be sure to install it. This should correct the issue. You can find a list of the fully supported chipsets in the Readme.TXT file located in the Final Fantasy VIII directory on your hard drive. If updated drivers do not correct the issue, you may need to run the game in Software Render mode. Run the FF8Config program in the Start menu for the game, and go the Graphics tab. The Rendering mode can be selected under "Renderer."
I have a series of horizontal and vertical lines appearing on my screen.
It has been established that various G-Force video cards have this grid across the screen. There is now a patch you can download to fix this.
