General

In order for you to play the game, you must have DirectX 5.0-compliant drivers for your video card. Please note that although DirectX 5.0 is installed with the game, your video card drivers will not be upgraded to DirectX 5.0 drivers. You will need to obtain the latest compliant drivers from your card manufacturer. DirectX 6 or higher has had mixed results with Final Fantasy 7 and is not recommended for use with the game. Occasionally it has helped with the game, but more often it creates problems. Any problems you have with DirectX 6 or higher must be addressed to Microsoft.

What 3D accelerator video cards are supported with Final Fantasy VII?

  • Voodoo
  • 3Dfx Voodoo2
  • 3Dfx Voodoo Rush
  • 3Dlabs Permedia2
  • ATI Rage Pro
  • Intel I740
  • Matrox G200

In addition are are a few other notes about video cards.

  • The banshee is not a chipset that is supported (it is an altered Voodoo2, and not backwards compliant with our game.)
  • Power VR2 (Power VR extreme) is the only support chipsets, not the older Power VR
  • The Ati Rage pro is the only supported chipset for FF7, not a rage, rage II or rage II+
  • The matrox Millenium G200 is the only supported card, not a M3D, millennium card, or mystique

What if my accelerator card is not one of those listed as supported?

If you do not have a supported 3D accelerator video card (or do not have a 3D accelerator video card), you can still play Final Fantasy VII in the software rendering mode. The game will automatically default to the software rendering mode if it does not detect a supported 3D accelerator video card. To play in 640x480 (Full Screen) in the software rendering mode, it is highly recommended that you have a Pentium 300 or better. Otherwise, please select one of the other two software rendering modes in the Configuration menu.

I am getting blank movies when trying to start up the game and the game will not run.
It is possible that the Duck True Motion (tm) movie player is not registering correctly when Direct Media Player installs. You can fix this problem by installing the latest update to Windows Media player located at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/mediaplayer/default.asp

It is possible that your video card drivers do not support the correct features to run the game using hardware 3D acceleration. Please refer to the question about 3D accelerators that Final Fantasy 7 supports.

Finally, the video/3D accelerator drivers are incorrectly installed or you are using a version that is not compatible with the game. You need to ensure that all drivers are installed correctly. If you need help with installation of hardware drivers, contact the manufacturer of the device. Please refer to our manufacturer list elsewhere on this site.

The game starts to play the first FMV (stars rotating) and then the game screen goes blank or locks up.
This is related to the video driver. Updating the reference drivers for your acceleration chipset should fix the problem. The drivers for the specific cards listed as supported are on the install disk (except for the RUSH cards and the Power VR Extreme). The ATi driver supplied has an installer that will update the drivers. The Voodoo cards drivers in the disk are self-extracting zip files. And the Permedia 2 and i740 drivers are already extracted in their respective folders on the CD.

The intro movie looks very grainy. Is this correct?
Yes, the full motion animations that are in Final Fantasy VII were directly translated from the Playstation version. These animation's original screen resolution was 320 x 200 pixels and have been stretched to 640 x480 pixels. This is what causes the grainy appearance. If you wish to view the animations as they were in the Playstation you will need to run the game in one quarter screen mode instead of full screen.

Movies play fine but all the graphics get all staticy.

Intros play fine but game locks to a black screen after the first battle.

The intro movies are upside down?
We have a patch available that will update the Duck True Motion movie player to solve this problem, please visit the Final Fantasy VII patch section for download.

I get multi colored text, and missing letters?
If you have a M200 card and have this problem, update your drivers from Matrox.
